Dr. Inderpal S. Sarkaria, M.D., M.B.A., FACS is a Professor of
Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical
Center, serving as Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery. He
specializes in general thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology, including
the surgical treatment of esophageal and lung cancers, lung nodules,
mediastinal tumors, chest wall tumors, malignant pleural mesothelioma, benign and malignant tracheal and
airway diseases, hiatal and diaphragm hernias, thoracic outlet syndrome, and associated chest conditions. He
also performs advanced procedures for GERD, achalasia, and complex esophageal surgery.
An internationally recognized thoracic surgical oncologist and expert in minimally invasive robotic thoracic
surgery, Dr. Sarkaria has made significant contributions in robotic thoracic surgery, lung cancer genomics,
and advanced imaging technologies. He has developed internationally recognized robotic thoracic surgery
programs and training curricula.
Dr. Sarkaria completed his medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey,
followed by general surgery residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, thoracic oncology research
fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), cardiothoracic and thoracic oncology
fellowships at MSKCC and NewYork-Presbyterian, and advanced minimally invasive thoracic surgery
fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He also holds an M.B.A. in executive
healthcare from the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business.
He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery,
a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and an active member of multiple professional societies,
including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Society of
Robotic Surgery, and the Upper Gastrointestinal International Robotic Association.
Dr. Sarkaria has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, more than 25 invited book chapters, and
delivered over 90 invited lectures worldwide.
