Medical Institute, University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA.

Randy Schekman is a professor in the Department of Molecular
and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley,
and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Since 2018, he has served as the scientific director of “Aligning
Science Across Parkinson’s Disease,” a major philanthropic
initiative launched in collaboration with The Michael J. Fox
Foundation to uncover the molecular and cellular mechanisms
underlying Parkinson’s Disease. Prof. Schekman previously
served as Editor-in-Chief of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), editor of
Annual Review of Cell and Developmental Biology, and founding editor of eLife.

His laboratory focuses on the mechanisms of vesicular trafficking in the secretory pathway of
eukaryotic cells, with current research examining the unconventional secretion of extracellular
vesicles and soluble proteins, such as alpha-synuclein - a process thought to relate to the spread of
pathology in Parkinson’s Disease. His numerous honors include the Gairdner International Award,
the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine,
shared with James Rothman and Thomas Südhof.
