Special Issue Introduction
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease
worldwide and a multisystem disorder associated with both hepatic and extrahepatic
complications. NAFLD significantly increases the risk of fatal and nonfatal
cardiovascular events, yet no standardized pharmacotherapy is currently available.
Multiple clinical trials are ongoing to explore novel therapeutic options.
This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in the diagnosis and management
of NAFLD. Topics include updates on disease definition, pathogenesis, diagnosis and
risk stratification, anti-inflammatory, anti-metabolic, and anti-fibrotic therapies, non-
invasive markers of treatment efficacy, and approaches for managing lean versus
obese NAFLD.
