Topic: New Perspectives on the
Diagnosis and Management of
HCC
It is with great pleasure that I present to the readers
this special issue of Hepatoma Research focused on
‘New Perspectives on the Diagnosis and Management
of HCC’.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common
type of primary liver cancer, which in turns accounts
for the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Despite
being the sixth most common cancer, it is the second
leading cause of cancer related deaths. Unfortunately,
HCC is often diagnosed at an advanced stage when
there are limited treatment options. With improved
survival of patients with cirrhotic liver disease and
