My research interests developing computer vision and AI techniques for context
awareness, machine consciousness and navigation in minimally invasive and robot-
assisted surgery. Particularly, I am interested in context understanding in endoscopic
procedures, surgical workflow analysis, field-of-view expansion, 3D reconstruction,
perception and navigation for surgical robotics.
Special Issue Introduction:
Surgery has undergone a profound transformation in recent decades, rapidly evolving
into a high-tech discipline. Increasingly technological advancements, such as modern
operating rooms (OR) featuring digital and interconnected equipment and novel
imaging, along with robotic procedures, hold immense potential to significantly
improve patient therapy and surgical outcomes. The synergy between surgery and
artificial intelligence offers unprecedented opportunities. Playing a pivotal role
within the realm of artificial intelligence, the application of high-speed, precise data
processing and data analysis is gaining ground in the field of surgery. At its core,
surgical data science stands as a critical discipline dedicated to enhancing the quality,
safety, and value of interventional healthcare through data acquisition, organization,
analysis, and modeling.
